It’s hard to believe divorce could ever be a “good” thing but given certain circumstances, it’s entirely possible for it to be the “right” or “only” thing to do. A new article out today discusses this issue based on a study done to analyze the effects of a divorce as well as the causes leading up to the divorce. Among causes, of course, financial difficulty still comes in at the top, especially in these difficult economic times.

Amato does not acknowledge that bad relationships between parents may be the reason for both the separation and the cause of the damage. Pressure to stay together may result in more dysfunctional children in intact families. Why assume the separation is the cause of later problems? There are other causes. Amato himself says that economic stressors also cause breakdown; we may do better to focus on fixing financial inequality.

His research found some broad correlations between family types and some problems that emerge later, and then assumes family breakdown is the cause.

Certain research topics re-appear every few years and find funding easily. The damage to children caused by divorce is one such recurrent subject, and Amato is a serial publisher on the topic.

Two family court judges in Maine have come out with a new book about how to do divorce the right way. Having presided over more than 10,000 divorce cases it seems fair to say they have a general idea of how to go about a divorce. Among the topics they discuss is how to find the right lawyer. Of course, if you’re considering a divorce it’s imperative to have competent legal counsel to help you through the process.

Family Court Judges Andrew Horton and John David Kennedy have presided over more than 10,000 trials or other courtroom events in family law cases. Divorce is one of the move significant life changing experiences a person will live through. Horton and Kennedy recently published, “Do Your Divorce Right: Straight Talk from Family Court Judges.” The book helps readers understand how to find and keep a lawyer, how to avoid a trial and how to achieve closure and peace.

Andrew Horton has been a judge since 1999, first on the Maine District Court and now on the Maine Superior Court. John David Kennedy was appointed as a Judge of the Maine District Court in 2002 and sits in the District Courts in mid-coast Maine.
